Making Dallas Even Better
After a night of terror and tragedy downtown, our city unites to mourn and pray.
D Magazine's celebration of the best of Dallas is the party of the year, and not just because we have to say that. Some of the city's best restaurants and purveyors of other treats and drinks will be serving up generous samples. There's an open bar. RC & The Gritz and Spinderella perform. There are surprises in store. And, best of all, we'll be there.
The North Texas Fair and Rodeo is in some ways overshadowed by that other Texas fair beginning next month. The Denton fair, which kicks off Aug. 18 and runs through Aug. 26, can’t match the State Fair of Texas’ size -- it’s hard to out-big an event that boasts a 55-foot tall talking cowboy statue -- but it doesn’t need to. The North Texas Fair and Rodeo is an institution in its own right, bringing crowds from Denton, Dallas, and beyond out to the fairgrounds at 2217 N. Carroll Blvd.
Early still-life paintings by these two masters show the artists mining a strikingly similar vein, their respective work complementing and deepening one another. (Or, if you take Rivera’s perspective, showcasing Picasso’s plagiarism.)
